Moving Supplies
While moving is almost always a stressful affair, there are a few basic steps you can follow to make getting to your new home with all your things in one piece as easy as possible. This general moving guide will be a rough outline of what you need to do to make moving fun--almost!
The first thing you need to do is to budget your time. This may sound like a cliché, but the biggest problem most people have when they're moving is putting everything off to the last minute. So, if you know when your lease is up, or that you will be relocating at a specific time, look at the calendar and start planning. If you're going to be hiring a mover, do so well in advance to make sure that you can get a good one. If you're moving yourself, make appropriate arrangements with a rental company. Plot deadlines for all these things on the calendar, preferably at least a month in advance.
Once you've got movers hired or a moving truck reserved, you can move on to figuring out how to pack your belongings. The first step in packing is actually deciding what your are going to take with you, and it's also usually the most difficult. Opinions vary on this, but I am of the mind that if you haven't seen or thought about something for six months or a year, then you most likely won't miss it. It can be great fun--and an added source of income--to take all the things that you don't want to move and have a garage sale with them. That way your old tables and appliances stay out of the land fill, plus you can take the cash you make and buy something you'll need at your new place--like pizza for your first night.
Packing the things you will take should be done with care. It is a waste of time and effort, not to mention money, to do a poor job on packing and have dishes break or paintings ruined. Use packing peanuts, foam, or air bags to secure fragile objects. Don't make any one box too heavy. And don't mix fragile and sturdy things in the same box. It also helps to come up with a scheme to identify boxes. Blue tags, living room, red tags, kitchen, etc. But make sure to write exactly what is in a box in big black letters as well.
About two weeks before you move date, call and make sure that the utilities will be in order in your new home. This is probably also a good time to let the post office know your forwarding address, and when to start forwarding. And if you haven't started already you should probably now budget a little extra for unexpected expenses like activation fees or to buy things you forgot at your old home once you're in your new one.
All this seems a bit stressful, doesn't it? Well, the final word of advise we can give you is to try and have a blast on moving day. Some families take home videos, others photos, to keep some record of the place they are leaving, but also to take note of the place they are setting foot in for the first time. Moving doesn't have to be only overwhelming, it can be the source of cherished memories as well.
